Come and raise a glass amongst friends at The Running Mare, a traditional English country inn overlooking picturesque Tilt Green to the south of the pretty village of Cobham in Surrey, just off the A3.
First established as a public house in 1756 – having been bought from a private owner for the grand sum of £60 – we are a family-owned, free house. We pride ourselves on the warmth of our welcome, the excellence of our beers and taste and quality of our food.
Tilt Green and The Running Mare have had a central role in Cobham life for several hundred years. A public house since 1756 – although the original building is older – it took its current name in 1784 and is still believed to be the only Running Mare in England. Unlike today the publicans have not always been of the best character, way back in 1784 “County Magistrates at Kingston held that Richard Howard, Victualler, assaulted the Revd Wm Hardy by throwing water on him and very much abused him with ill language”. We serve a traditional Sunday lunch – with all the trimmings – designed for those with a healthy appetite. Our popular Running Mare Mixed Roast is a perfect solution for those who just can’t choose between pork, beef or lamb. On sunny summer evenings and weekends we barbecue on the terrace; offering everything from Chef’s home made burgers through to grilled sardines, giant prawns and lobster.particularly renowned. From June, weather permitting, we will be barbecuing on the terrace through weekends and sunny evenings. Grilled lobster, squid, giant prawns, plus, of course, top quality steaks and Chef’s home made burgers.
